ABSTRACT The semi-arid region faces problems related to water deficit and the presence of brackish water that compromise crop performance. Therefore, irrigation frequency can enhance the growth of agricultural crops of interest even under salt stress conditions. In this context, the objective of the present study was to evaluate different irrigation frequencies with water of higher and lower salinity on the agronomic performance of millet. The experiment was conducted from September to November 2020, in the experimental area of the Auroras Seedling Production Unit, belonging to the Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira, Redenção, Ceará, Brazil. The experimental design used was completely randomized in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with five repetitions. The first factor corresponded to four irrigation frequencies (F1 - daily irrigation; F2 - irrigation every two days; F3 - irrigation every three days; F4 - irrigation every four days) and the second factor consisted of two levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.3 and 5.0 dS m-1). Salt stress (5.0 dS m-1) negatively affected leaf area, plant height, stalk diameter, panicle length, and leaf, stem, panicle, and total dry mass of millet, under daily and four-day irrigation frequencies. Increasing the interval in irrigation frequency to beyond two days negatively affects the agronomic performance of millet crop, regardless of the electrical conductivity of water used (0.3 or 5.0 dS m-1). Under salt stress conditions, adopting irrigation frequencies between two and three days can be a viable alternative for irrigation management in pearl millet crop.

RESUMO A região semiárida apresenta problemas relacionados ao déficit hídrico e presença de água salobra que comprometem o desempenho das culturas. Assim, a frequência de irrigação pode promover melhores condições de desenvolvimento das culturas de interesse agrícola mesmo em condições de estresse salino. Neste sentido, objetivou-se avaliar diferentes frequências de irrigação com água de maior e menor salinidade sobre desempenho agronômico do milheto. O experimento foi realizado no período de setembro a novembro de 2020, na área experimental da Unidade de Produção de Mudas Auroras, pertencente a Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira, Redenção, Ceará. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 4 × 2, com cinco repetições. O primeiro fator corresponde a quatro frequências de irrigação (F1 - irrigação diária; F2 - irrigação a cada dois dias; F3 - irrigação a cada três dias; F4 - irrigação a cada quatro dias) e o segundo consistiu em dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,3 e 5,0 dS m-1). O estresse salino (5,0 dS m-1) afetou negativamente a área foliar, altura da planta, diâmetro do colmo, comprimento da panícula, massa seca da folha, caule, panícula e total do milheto, sob irrigação diária e cada quatro dias. O aumento do intervalo na frequência de irrigação acima de dois dias afeta o desempenho agronômico do milheto, independente da condutividade elétrica da água (0,3 ou 5,0 dS m-1). Em condições de estresse salino, adotar frequências de irrigação entre dois e três dias pode ser uma alternativa viável para o manejo da irrigação do milheto.

RESUMO A cobertura morta vegetal poderá atenuar os efeitos deletérios dos sais presentes na água de irrigação. Objetivou-se no presente estudo avaliar o efeito da salinidade da água de irrigação e da cobertura morta vegetal no crescimento e na produção da cultura da beterraba. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em Redenção, Ceará. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 × 4, com cinco repetições, correspondentes a dois valores de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa: água de abastecimento - 0,3 dS m-1 e solução salina - 5,8 dS m-1; e quatro tipos de cobertura morta (casca de arroz, bagana de carnaúba, restos de culturas espontânea e sem cobertura - tratamento controle). O uso de cobertura morta vegetal mitigou os efeitos dos sais da água de irrigação para altura de planta, área foliar, diâmetro do caule e da raiz tuberosa. O aumento da condutividade elétrica na água de irrigação afetou negativamente o número de folhas, comprimento da raiz tuberosa e a produção, porém aumentou os sólidos solúveis da cultura da beterraba.

ABSTRACT Vegetal mulching can mitigate the harmful effects of salts present in irrigation water. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of irrigation water salinity and mulching on the growth and yield of beet crops. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at Redenção, Ceará State. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, with five replicates, composed of two levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water - ECw: tap water - 0.3 dS m-1 and saline solution - 5.8 dS m-1; and four types of mulching (rice hulls, carnauba bagana, crop residues, and a control treatment without soil cover). The use of vegetal mulching, mitigated the effects of irrigation with saline water on the variables plant height, leaf area, stem diameter, and tuberous root. The increase of the salt concentration in irrigation water negatively affected the number of leaves, length of the tuberous root, and yield. But, it increased the soluble solids in the beet crop.

RESUMO A irrigação com água salina afeta o desempenho agronômico da cultura do milho, no entanto, a utilização de cobertura morta vegetal pode mitigar o estresse salino e promover aumento na produtividade. Desta forma, objetivou-se avaliar a produtividade da cultura do milho submetido a diferentes níveis salinos na água de irrigação, na presença e ausência de cobertura morta vegetal. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 2 × 2, sendo o primeiro fator a salinidade da água de irrigação (1,0 e 4,0 dS m-1) e o segundo, com e sem cobertura morta e cinco repetições. As variáveis analisadas foram: massa da espiga com e sem palha e do sabugo, diâmetro da espiga, comprimento da espiga e a produtividade. A água de irrigação com maior condutividade elétrica afetou negativamente a massa da espiga com e sem palha, diâmetro e comprimento de espiga. O uso de cobertura vegetal no solo aumentou a massa da espiga com e sem palha, diâmetro e comprimento de espiga. A agua de maior salinidade (4,0 dS m-1) reduz a produtividade da cultura do milho, porém com menor intensidade na presença da cobertura vegetal morta.

ABSTRACT Irrigation with saline water affects the agronomic performance of the maize crop; however, the use of vegetal mulch may mitigate salt stress and promote an increase in yield. In this way, this study aimed to evaluate the grain yield of the maize plants submitted to different water salinity levels in the presence and absence of mulch. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme. The first factor was the salinity of the irrigation water (1.0 and 4.0 dS m-1) and the second, with and without mulch, and five replicates. The variables analyzed were: unhusked ear mass, husked ear mass, cob mass, straw mass, husked ear diameter, husked ear length, and yield. The irrigation water with higher electrical conductivity affects negatively the ear mass with and without straw, ear diameter and ear length. The use of vegetation cover on the soil increased the unhusked ear mass with and without straw, ear diameter and length. The water with higher salinity (4.0 dS m-1) reduces the maize grain yield but with less intensity in the presence of mulch.
